Foreign fund managers are cautious on Indonesia

Article Abstract:

Indonesian president Megawati Sukarnoputri has her work cut out for her in strengthening the country's economy. Problems such as stalled foreign payments, large budget deficit, and billions in assets under the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency need attention. With Indonesia's foreign debt at US$140 billion, and domestic debt at US$40 billion, foreign investors are prepared to wait on any Indonesian investments until the economy begins to strengthen again.

New product for Citigroup

Citigroup Asset Management is now offering unit investment trusts (UITs) in Hong Kong. A unit investment trust holds a set portfolio of stocks for a set period. This is the first time UITs have been available in Asia outside of Japan.

Gyaranteed funds' shine is fading as turnaround nears

Hong Kong investors continue to invest in guaranteed funds despite predictions of a turnaround in the economy. Cautious investors find these funds attractive despite the high fees which accompany them.
