Swooping in: how discount airlines profited from their bigger rivals' woes

Article Abstract:

While major global airlines have been forced to downsize over the past three years due to such factors as terrorism, recession, the SARS epidemic, and high fuel prices, discount airlines have managed to increase their presence in the m arket, cutting cost-saving deals for aircraft , acquiring gates at airports, and hiring airline workers on furlough. One such success story is that of the profitable discount airline AirTran Airways Inc.

America West averts strike by attendants

America West Airlines and its flight attendants have reached a labor agreement that prevents a strike at the carrier. The agreement prevented the strike just minutes after the passing of a strike deadline. Both sides had closed the gap between their differences to $16.5 million over a five-year period before federally-ordered mediation went into effect. America West is the ninth-largest airline in the US.

Decelerating business travel sends Continental's earnings into tailspin

Continental Airlines posted a decline of 36% in its earnings for the 2001 first-quarter. The company, hurt by a slowdown in business travel, posted $9 million (10.1 million euros) in quarterly earnings.
