Hong Kong utility stocks pose a risk: some issues more exposed to land market's woes than investors realize

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong stock market investors are advised to scrutinize their utility holdings due to the reliance of Hong Kong utilities on selling property to boost profits. Forecast earnings for utility Hong Kong & China Gas, for example, is placed at HK$2.69 bil for 1998, which is an 18% increase over profits in 1997, while earnings for 1999 are expected to significantly affected since many of its property investments and sales will be reported on that year.

Forceful holder spars vexing questions; Exchange Fund Investment's potential conflicts of interest worry some

Article Abstract:

The Exchange Fund Investment Ltd is a body that safeguards the US$20.51 billion Hong Kong shares for the government. It announced in Dec 1998 that it would be involved in shareholders' meetings which minority shareholders perceive would be beneficial to them. Fund managers, on the other hand, are apprehensive of the body's plan because they feel that it would vote in the interests of public policy instead of profits.

Credit shortage damps Hong Kong bourse's prospects

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's credit crunch hampers the prospects of the stocks of the region's companies. In spite of the decline in local interest rates, the credit shortage may impede the growth of companies and may jeopardize their viability. Speculative attacks have resulted in many banks sharply limiting their borrowing from the interbank market.
