Hoop nightmares

Article Abstract:

There are growing concerns about approaches in China to the regulation of professional basketball, which is extremely popular among ordinary people. Initially, the country's Sports Commission linked with International Management Group to create the Hilton League, but problems emerged when the Sports Commission also licensed a second league, managed by Spectrum called the CNBA. This prompted a players' strike, the first ever in China, and international lawsuits. The new league has clashed with the NBA, which has threatened legal action over the CNBA name.

Double take; Beijing's Palace Museum quietly unveils its rarely glimpsed masterpieces

Article Abstract:

The Palace Museum in Beijing and the National Palace Museum in Taipei hosted separate but curiously twinned exhibitions of classical Chinese art in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the emperor Puyi's eviction. Beijing barely drew any visitors, largely because of a dearth of publicity for works that had not been seen since 1949 and may not soon be shown again. While the two museums could benefit from sharing their works, each has an important political role in legitimizing its govt, so that is unlikely.

A rare bird

Article Abstract:

Keyuan Light Aircraft, which has recently produced its first AD-200 small aircraft, will not make a profit for at least five years, according to founder Yuan Yongmin. The AD-200 is the only fiberglass plane of its class made in China, and is the most affordable, at around $30,000. The company hopes that the AD-200 will attract interest from the many new flight clubs which have been established in China over recent years.
