Deregulation was expected to force airlines to lower fares and become more efficient. But the large airlines devised numerous ways to maintain their market share and put off labor strife. Now, their financial situation demands drastic action, as exemplified by US Airways' current predicament.

AMR avoids bankruptcy filing

Article Abstract:

AMR Corp. has reached tentative agreements with all of its three labor unions on a pay and benefit cut deal. The deal, which will avoid a bankruptcy filing, will lower benefits and salaries by around $1.8 billion (1.7 billion euros).

AMR reaches pact with union, averting filing for bankruptcy

AMR Corp. has reached a deal with the Association of Professional Flight Attendants labor union for wage cuts and productivity changes. The deal will help American Airlines avoid bankruptcy at least temporarily.
