How reassuring: Hong Kong

There has been some lightening up from China as the transition for Hong Kong begins. Along with Li's appointment, Tung Chee-hwa, the island's new chief executive, is also showing less restraints by allowing small changes to his limits on civil liberties in the interest of national security.

Waiting for the man: Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

A committee of 400 Hong Kong citizens will recommend to China a chief executive to lead Hong Kong when it rejoins China in 1997. Hong Kong's liberals are invited, but consider the committee a betrayal of the recently elected democratic government. Three leading candidates are discussed.
