How to be a 'super-bidder': why is it that 'super-bidder' architects scoop most new business? Some new research throws light on their all-important early tactics

Article Abstract:

Many architectural practices often win less than half the business they bid for, with a small core of 'super-bidders' taking over three quarters of their target contracts, according to new research by the University of Luton's faculty of management. The research shows that successful bidders are usually consistently better at some activities during the bidding process. These include the pre-bid stage, understanding and communication with cient, and putting together an effective bid team. Successful bidders were more likely to understand the business climate the client is operating in and have easier access to competitor intelligence.

Reinventing Aalto in England

Article Abstract:

Young architects no longer revere the work of Alvar Aalto but they do respect his contribution to the profession and their work reflects his influence. Allies and Morrison Architects is more knowledgeable than most about Aalto's work because Graham Morrison studied his designs in Finland. Their work contains subtle features, such as their attention to detail, use of lighting and pattern which are associated with Aalto. Other architectural firms have also been influenced by Aalto in the way they use materials, plan their buildings and incorporate features.

Bowing to the inevitable

Article Abstract:

The expression of materials through resolution in simple, repetitive and good detailing is a key feature of the work of architectural firm Cartwright Pickard, formed by James Pickard and Peter Cartwright. Both men are also determined that their practice will have a presence in the north of the UK, as they feel that this will make it less vulnerable to recession. However, Cartwright Pickard is also committed to making a name for itself as a London, England, practice.
