Yankee trader: American builds business empire in Thailand

Article Abstract:

Bill Heinecke developed a business empire from two ventures in Thailand. He started out with an office cleaning service and an agency placing advertisements for foreign firms in Thai newspapers. Jardine Matheson acquired his janitorial service, and Ogilvy and Mather acquired the agency, retaining him as managing director for two years. His companies include The Pizza, Royal Garden Resorts and Minor Corp. He is also involved in real estate and hotel projects which have not always been as lucrative as some of his projects.

Find the niche

Article Abstract:

Starbucks and Borders Books and Music have both been successful in Singapore. Borders has had to hire more staff due to strong demand. The book retailer encourages browsing and a wide range of titles, though prices are no cheaper than elsewhere. Borders is also considered fashionable. Meanwhile, Starbucks sees the problems faced by local retailers as providing opportunities for expansion since key locations are made available. Neither retailer relies on tourists and this has helped strengthen their operations.

Hope eternal

Article Abstract:

Many observers believe that the recent auction by Japan National Railway Settlement Corp of around a quarter of a former yard in central Tokyo, Japan, which raised $3 billion, is an indication that commercial property prices have reached their lowest possible level. There is optimism that the real estate industry will now begin to enjoy a revival. However, there are still very few major transactions, and it is very hard to assess how prices are moving.
