IMPACT ON BROADCASTING

Article Abstract:

The Internet and convergence have paved way for Web broadcasting. Unlike the traditional radio and TV, web broadcasting offers news on demand at any time to the listener. It is also accessible to anyone anywhere in the world. Satellite broadcasters are set to bypass the cable operators to set up direct to home (DTH) service. At present this kind of broadcasting is hampered by poor bandwidth, resulting in frequent interruptions to Indian listeners. Web broadcasters are however targeting millions of Indians living abroad. TV 18, a television software company is launching a new business channel on the budget and daily news. These small players have the potential to pose a threat to veterans like All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD). DD has already launched its Internet Channel-DD India. This is popular among non-resident Indians (NRIs). The penetration of this channel in India will depend on the penetration of the Internet in India. (uh)(psr)
