RECKITT PIRAMAL SETS Rs240 CRORE AS SALES TARGETS

Reckitt Piramal India Ltd (RPIL), a 60:40 joint venture between Reckitt & Coleman (R&C) and Nicholas Piramal India Ltd, has targeted sales of Rs240 crore for its first year of operations ending March 1999. The company plans to introduce six new products in 1999. The company's first product is likely to be Gaviscon, an anti-acidity drug. The media expenditure is to be met by both parties of the joint venture. R&C's Dettol, which commands 85 percent of the market segment faces growing competition from Hindustan Lever's Johnson & Johnson product Savlon which however, has just 10 percent of the market share. BURROUGHS WELLCOME SALES UP

Burroughs Wellcome India (BWI) has posted 8.4 percent rise in its sales to Rs203.16 crore for the year ended December 31, 1998 (Rs187.50 crore for 1997). During the period, the net profit grew by 38 percent to Rs24.90 crore (Rs18.03 crore). BWI incurred an expenditure of Rs2.04 crore (Rs0.83 crore) for voluntary retirement scheme. It proposes to pay 50 percent (40 percent) dividend. (ag)(psr)
