ISI WRITES INDIAN SPEECH SYNTHESIS SOFTWARE

Article Abstract:

Scientists at Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta, have developed a speech synthesis software which can automatically read pages of Devnagari and Bengali scripts. The system is a finetuned version of Optical Character Recognition system. The requirements are a personal computer and a scanner. The scanner reads the script, software processes the data into a voice which speaks the same language as that of the script. The software is expected to cost around Rs10,000. This will help the people with no eyesight for reading/studying books. (um)(psr)

Lee, a major player in the premium jeans segment in India, is to launch its Lee Youth range. This is targeted at the 4-14 age group, with separate lines for boys and girls. The range comprises jeans, overalls, shorts, skirts and T-shirts. There are also accessories like caps, belts, socks and bags. The prices vary from Rs595 for a pair of jeans to Rs 195 for a T-shirt. Arvind Fashions Limited will make and market the range through 40 exclusive Lee stores in 20 cities across India. (uh)
