If in doubt, seek Europe

Article Abstract:

France contributed to NATO action in Yugoslavia in 1999, yet France is also critical of the US and sees a need for an independent stand against the US in Europe. France is concerned about the strength of Germany, and this has been a key factor in French policy in the European Union (EU). There have been three invasions of France by Germany, in 1870, 1914 and 1940, and this has led to persistent concerns which have been partially tackled through government efforts to maintain good relations with Germany. There is cooperation with the US, despite the French desire to be independent, and this applies to policies in Africa as well as Yugoslavia.

Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Europe's provocative Green

Article Abstract:

Daniel Cohn-Bendit, one of 12 members of the European Parliament representing Germany's Greens, has attracted considerable controversy in France as a result of his decision to become leader of the French Greens for the elections to the European Parliament in summer 1999. He was actually born in France, but opted for German nationality. He is the first foreigner to lead an electoral campaign in France. He is placing considerable pressure on mainstream French politicians with his policies, which include phasing out nuclear power and allowing all illegal immigrants to have residency permits if they wish.

Outflanked: conventional forces in Europe

Article Abstract:

The conventional forces in Europe treaty has been amended to give Russia more leeway in altering its military strength along its flanks. The original treaty was negotiated during the Cold War and was considered obsolete. The revision may help pave the way for NATO enlargement.
