Illuminating spaces

Article Abstract:

The use of space and light can be found in many modern architectural designs which demonstrates the relationship between art and architecture. The construction of a blue area within the Science Museum Wellcome wing, London, England, has been influenced by the colour blue used by the artist Yves Klein. Artist Robert Irwin has furthered his work on the idea of phenomenal art and has created several installations which involve the surrounding architecture. Miles van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion built in 1929 used glass and light in architecture for its effect not out of necessity.

Daylighting in perspective

Article Abstract:

Natural ventilation and lighting can be incorporated inarchitectural design to reduce the adverse health effects of having to work in artificialenvironments and to tackle environmental concerns over excess energy usage. Up to half of allthe electricity consumed by a non-domestic building may be accounted for by artificial lighting, but this can be reduced 30-70% through the use of natural light if the remaining artificial lightingis properly controlled. The level of daylight available for a building will depend on its locationand immediate surroundings.

Design method for daylighting

Article Abstract:

Recent advances in daylight calculation mean that daylighting is becoming an increasingly important part of energy efficient building design. The energy-labelling scheme BREEM now includes a daylighting requirement, and advises use of the average daylight factor, which can be easily calculated. Using the average daylight factor and following a four-stage sequence of design decisions allows architects to design the right size window .
