Improving Part Performance in Developing Countries - A Case Study

Article Abstract:

One of the main objectives of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), has been the expansion of lesser developed countries' trade. Direct and indirect port costs represent a good part of the expense of international shipping. For some time, the United Nations has helped port authorities improve efficiency. However, a more thoroughly explained approach is needed due to implementation considerations. The flow of import cargo is highlighted in this case study. Diagrams indicate four capacity stages of a route through a berth. Changing the capacity part of the greatest capacity part of the berth is not recommended. Increasing the capacity of the narrowest part of the berth will increase the whole. Parallel analysis, using basic and simulated methodology, was used. Different classes and routes for cargo are analyzed. A two-man team approach to berth throughput is reviewed.

The similarities and differences between the members of the Assn. of European Operations Research Societies (EURO) were examined. To this end, a questionnaire on their membership, activities, objectives and financial standing was circulated among members on the occasion of EURO's 20th anniversary. The results reveal that member societies either have an overwhelming number of practitioners or non-academics among its members, or have a membership composed mainly of academics.

A heuristic approach to improving the design of nurse training schedules

Article Abstract:

The transitional period simulation program (TRANSIM) is an effective method for simulating staffing levels of trainee nurses on wards as well as the determination of overstaffings and understaffings. An extension of the TRANSIM program, which generates possible plans of action for re-scheduling training courses to limit the occurrence of overstaffings and understaffings, is presented.
