In Bangladesh, what goes up is expected to come down

Article Abstract:

Bangladesh's stock market performed beyond expectations in 1996, as the Dhaka Stock Exchange Index has climbed up by a whopping 300% since July following a national election. While local investors took advantage of the surge, foreign investors have not joined the scramble and in fact sold steadily as the market soared, concerned that the stock market boom will soon turn to bust. Lured by the market's unprecedented rise, over 500,000 new investors have entered the market in the last few months, unaware of market fundamentals and risks.

A trend toward indexing

Article Abstract:

Analysts of Asian stock markets and financial services industries believe that majority of fund companies may discontinue active stock picking and replace them with indexing funds as capitalization of stock markets continues to decrease in 1998. Indexing is already being employed by some firms as the compulsion for investing large sums in Asian markets weakens due to inactivity. However, other analysts do not discount the role of stock-pickers due to the large number of bargains as market trends shift.

Singapore's low prices are no bargain to wary contrarian

Article Abstract:

The Straits Times Index has begun to slow and, according to analysts, investors seeking to buy Singapore stocks must reconsider their options. Prices are currently cheap, but the downward trend of stock prices is expected to continue. Commercial property and motor stocks are still profitable, but the volatility of the banking and residential property markets should signal investors to be cautious.
