The Promenade Concerts are a series of concerts in London, England, which are celebrating French music in 1999. The concerts are played at London's Albert Hall, andlisted to on the radio in Europe as a whole. There have long been close links between English and French musicians, and Paris, France was a key musical center in the 19th century. The French government has sought to promote French music, including operetta, and early music research was pioneered in France.

French language purists are bemoaning sloppy grammar and syntax and the increased use of slang, abbreviated words and Americanisms. Studies show, however, that, students are better at creative writing than the previous generation. Several examples of new words are provided.
