Dan Lungren's difference

Article Abstract:

The Californian candidates for state governorship, Gray Davis, Democrat, and Dan Lungren, Republican, are similar in many ways. Both are Roman Catholics and have been lawyers, and are in their 50s. The Republicans have held California's governorship for 16 years but this could change The Democrats have more voters registered, but have previously tended not to choose strong candidates who could attract voters from the suburbs. The Republicans tend not to attract Latino voters, though Lungren is seeking to change this. A defeat for Lungren would hit the Republican party.

In search of the golden mean

Article Abstract:

The idea of the Third Way in politics has come to be associated with Europe and welfarism, and has been discredited in the US by President Bill Clinton, but in California it has been espoused by Democratic governor, Gray Davis. He sets out the idea as involving a mix of voluntary effort and government intervention to tackle collective issues. Davis does not use the term 'Third Way' but his ideas fit those of the UK prime minister, Tony Blair. He aims to appeal to the political center and has stressed that he does not plan major changes.
