In the Chinese grain

Article Abstract:

Chinese antique furniture is becoming increasingly popular. The elegant lines and craftsmanship of this furniture gives it wide appeal and prices at auctions reflect the rise in popularity. Pieces from the Ming period reflect the clean lines of that period, while later Qing furniture is more decorative. Buyers come from Asia, Europe and America and the supply is diminishing while demand is rising. Fakes have appeared on the market, and the genuine article has an investment value as the scarcity leads the price to rise.

Cup of woe: the World Cup was blighted by events that go against the grain of the sport. But don't blame it all on commercialization

Article Abstract:

The sad spectacle of the 1996 World Cup of cricket demonstrated the pitfalls of extreme nationalism and religious fundamentalism, though savaging the sport's gentlemanly reputation. Commercialization was not to blame for the hooliganism and poor conduct, and has in fact drawn in millions of fans and made games more exciting and colorful. While the fans showed the worst behavior, players also exhibited poor sportsmanship, racism, and other flaws. In a way, the tournament epitomized all that cricket should not be.

Article Abstract:

Locally born Portuguese of mixed blood in Macao are disturbed by Portugal's failure to appoint them to high government positions as Portugal localizes Macao's government before it is returned to Chinese rule. Many of the Macanese hold civil service positions, but they claim that some are being fired and that others lack secure pensions. Macao's government refutes the charges and states that the pension issue will be resolved.
