Indonesia: ready for action

Article Abstract:

The fast-growing Indonesian economy is encouraging industrial development in the region. One such is the reorganization of Indonesian conglomerate Lippo Group which has restructured its brokerage arm Lippo Securities into an investment bank. The move involved Lippo Securities increasing its 40% stake in Asuransi Lippo Life, an insurance company, to 45%. The sale raised some $389 million for the conglomerate's owners, the Riady family. Separately, it is rumored that the influential Suharto family is seeking to gain control of a large Indonesian-based automotive company, Astra International.

Korea Inc

Article Abstract:

Many observers feel that there could be a strong rise in the number of acquisition and merger deals in South Korea in 1997, following the abolition of legislation which prevents an institution or investor from buying more than 10% of a public company at the beginning of 1997. Merger and acquisition deals in South Korea are currently almost always friendly, and usually take place between members of one of the country's very large conglomerates. These conglomerates may begin to face competition from foreign companies.

Ongoing trend or delicate bubble?

Article Abstract:

The public-to-private (PTP) investment market is controlled by several important factors which may eventually cause the expanding market to shrink. The success of a bid may depend on secrecy, with deals failing at the last moment due to counter bids being made by rivals.
