Indonesia struts world stage: but domestic problems hobble its international ambitions

Article Abstract:

President Suharto of Indonesia would like to increase both his own and his country's international profiles. Having met his domestic goals, he wants to emulate his predecessor, President Sukarno. The very elements of Indonesia's success, however, may get in his way. economic success has given a political will and voice to the growing middle class, and the government's record with civil rights in East Timor impedes its international ambitions. The country may be trying to imitate China's blend of economic growth and political repression.

Manila looks for a slingshot: Philippines is bringing international opinion to bear on China

Article Abstract:

Also called Mischief Reef, it is near the Philippines, and the Chinese occupation violates the 1992 Manila Declaration. China will certainly want bilateral discussions, but Manila knows it would be at a disadvantage, and would do well to bring the issue up at the Asean-China forum on political and security issues in Apr.

Official propaganda no problem: Hong Kong mouthpiece won't threaten freedom of the press

Article Abstract:

China's plans to establish official newspapers and television and radio stations in Hong Kong need not be seen as a threat to free speech in the region to become a Special Administrative Region of China in 1997. State-run media outlets provide the public with government information that may not be provided by commercial sources. As long as independent media organizations are preserved, the public will have alternatives to government information.
