Indonesia's second chance

Article Abstract:

Indonesia is holding elections and there are 48 political parties for voters to choose from. There are a number of issues that any new government will have to tackle, such as the role of the armed forces, which have become corrupt, and the role of relgion. There are also problems with the banking system, and with a shrinking of gross domestic product. There has been agreement with the International Monetary Fund for aid, and attempts have been made to strengthen the banking system, but wider economic reforms are needed.

In suspense

Article Abstract:

A peace agreement was signed in Jan 1998 in Papua New Guinea relating to a conflict in Bougainville, where rebel leaders sought secession. The rebels claim that the Papua New Guinea parliament, which has not approved a government for Bougainville, has betrayed them. Rebel leaders are threatening to abandon peace talks, and aid has been promised from New Zealand and Australia if the peace process continues. There are 240 Australian-led troops in Bougainville, which has been relatively calm.
