Recapturing lost traffic

Article Abstract:

The collapse of Indonesia's economic, political and social structures was more extensive than that of any country in Asia and, by 1998, had eliminated more than 10 years of air traffic growth. Indonesian airports lost 30%-40% of their passengers on average in 1998, with tourist arrivals declining by 16% in 1998 to 4.34 million, compared to more than 5 million in 1997. Preliminary 1999 figures indicate little improvement in the financial situation of these airports.

Growth masks competition

Article Abstract:

French airports were able to post significant growth in their passenger traffic in 1999. Traffic in France amounted to 118.37 million passengers while total European traffic was recorded at 912 million. The major airports continue to be Paris Orly, Roissy Charles de Gaulle and Nice. Hub airports, however, presented the highest growth rates. The increasing power of airline alliances are, however, threatening the viability of provincial airports. High-speed train routes are also threatening French airports.

Indonesia's slow recovery

Article Abstract:

Air transport in Indonesia has started on the road to recovery after three years of decline. The process is predicted to take another five years. Indonesia's National Air Carriers Assn reports that passengers reached only 6.75 million from 1998 onwards after totalling 13 million in the previous year. Passenger traffic is expected to hit 7.5 million in 2000, rising slowly to 8.2 million in 2001, 9.6 milion in 2002, 10.3 million in 2003/04, finally returning to 1997 levels in 2005.
