Inflation fears bubble up: rising oil prices threaten low-rate climates

Article Abstract:

The rising prices of crude-oil coupled with the increasing demand in Asia have sparked concerns from the region's rebounding economies such as South Korea, Thailand and the Philippines. Oil prices, which in Sep 1999 were at their highest levels since 2 1/2 years ago, threaten to increase interest rates in these countries. To reduce the impact of higher oil prices on consumers, South Korea and Thailand temporarily delayed the increase in electricity tariffs and lowered excise taxes.
