Innovative hand grenade from the UK defeats combat body armor

Article Abstract:

Numerica of the UK has patented a hand grenade design that is capable of defeating titanium-faced aramid combat armor at a distance of 5m. The grenade, which is potentially lethal at much farther ranges, has been submitted to the UK Ministry of Defence as the company's bid for the Next Generation Hand Grenade that will replace the L2A2. The weapon can be hand-thrown, muzzle-launched or fired from an underslung grenade launcher.

UK tests non-acoustic sensors for shallow-water minehunting

Article Abstract:

The UK Defence and Evaluation Research Agency is testing a series of nonacoustic sensors that can be used in detecting mines in shallow waters and surf zones. Each of the sensors is made up of a magnetic radiometer, an electrooptical sensor and a chemical sensor. Initial sea trials indicate that the sensors have a detection range of 20m against an oil drum with a low magnetic signature. The electrooptical sensor has a solid- state blue-green laser while the chemical sensor detects concentrations of dissolved explosive from the surface of a mine.

The UK Defense Procurement Agency (DPA) has called for risk-reduction studies in support of its program to procure a precision guided bomb (PGB). The results of the six-month studies will be used to revise DPA's plans for a follow-on acquisition. The PGB program involves replacing the Royal Air Force's existing bombs with those that can hit targets more accurately in all types of wheather. The US-made Mk80 is one PGB being considered.
