Instant oodles; noodle maker Tingyi might be the best China play

Article Abstract:

China shares have returned to favor with investors thanks to a perception that the market has bottomed out and to the listing of several high-quality companies. Tyingyi Holding, managed by parent company Ting Hsin of Taiwan, has quickly seized a 23.5% share of China's growing market for instant noodles with its Master Kang brand, and aims for 40% in five years. In late Jan it listed for 12.5 times earnings and was oversubscribed 15 times, in contrast to Beijing-selected Jingwei Textile Machinery's more modest success.

Game over: China Venturetech falls from its pedestal

Article Abstract:

China Venturetech Investment has lost its luster following reports of a possible management reshuffle in the wake of losses on speculative deals. The state company has not lived up to its early hype because of ego conflict between its founders and a strategy based more on style than on substance. Its declining fortunes and feeble profits indicate that connections are not as all-important in China as many people believed.

China play

Article Abstract:

The quick growth in China's economy has had a substantial influence on Hongkong's economy and has smoothened the colony's economic integration with China. Hongkong's economic growth was 5-6% for 1992, in contrast with 3.9% for the previous year. Inflation, however, continues and currency rates have not risen yet. Hongkong also enjoys a good trade balance because of China's success.
