Integrating fabric and function

Article Abstract:

The new library for Anglia Polytechnic University has been designed to be low energy and environmentally consious. The initial design was drawn up during a week long workshop attended by architects, engineers and users. The low energy building uses natural lighting, stack effect ventilation and high levels of insulation. Architects and engineers combined to ensure the fabric of the building was integrated with the building managament system. Temperature stability is achieved by use of the exposed thermal mass which is to be cooled at night. The design work was completed in six weeks and construction is proceeding in a co-operative spirit.

Prefabricating the superstructure

Article Abstract:

The 40,000 sq meter office development for the Inland Revenue at Nottingham, England is constructed from prefabricated components. Architects Michael Hopkins and Partners and Ove Arup and Partners have placed 'L' shaped and quadrangle buildings on the riverside site. Local brick piers support glazed walls while the precast concrete floors are visible from the exterior. The heavyweight superstructure is prefabricated by Trent Concrete and sub-contractors. As well as the novel construction methods, the buildings have high levels of energy efficiency.

Read all about it

Article Abstract:

Bennetts Associates' Jubilee Library is located at the center of a regeneration master plan in Brighton. The future design development phase of the library, which includes the energy-conserving design, integrating fabrics and services, is discussed stressing the client service, the functional, 'downplaying the architecture', a 'richness without being too outgoing', 'constantly seeking an integrity of language'.
