Internal market and sectoral issues

Article Abstract:

There has been particular emphasis recently on conflict between the European Union's potential for simplifying legislation by bringing together national laws and its potential for making legislative issues more complicated by bringing in more legislation at a European level. The European Parliament has not welcomed a report from the Molitor group which calls for the simplification of European legislation. Latest legislative changes have affected areas including border controls, consumer protection, energy and company law.

Most of the delays are in sectors including insurance, public procurement, company law and intellectual property. Member countries are also inconsistent in how they implement major directives in the financial services sector. Article further discusses the internal market with relation to different sectors.
