International economy

Article Abstract:

Economic growth has slowed world wide in the year to the end of Mar 1996, but a resumption of stronger growth appears probable. Some major economies are emerging from recession and they include Japan and Russia. Latin American economies are also recovering from the aftermath of the Mexican financial crisis. Expansion in Asia appears to be sustainable. US growth appears to have reached the limits of its capacity and a rise in growth could bring the risk of inflation. World economic growth is forecast at a little under 4% for 1997 and was a little over 3% for 1995 to 1996.

International economy

Article Abstract:

World economic growth is recovering in 1996 following a slowdown in 1995. Asia continues to show strong economic growth, and recovery is under way in Latin America and Japan. Inflation is stable in developed economies with a small rise forecast for 1997. Meanwhile the US dollar has dropped in value in 1st half 1996, but this may only be a temporary phenomenon. US interest rates are likely to rise while rates in Europe are likely to drop, trends likely to lead to a rise in the value of the dollar.

The US economy is still buoyant in 3rd qtr 1996, though growth has slowed. Interest rates have been reduced in western Europe and modest recovery is likely to continue in 1997.
