Intervention in industry: refurbishing factories

Article Abstract:

British industry tends to make the efficiency of the building envelope or structure the lowest priority as far as capital spending goes, and this means that it is rare to have a simple refurbishment project. Architects must often handle factories which have been neglected or given only minimal maintenance, which were built to low standards or which no longer meet health and safety requirements. However, factory refurbishments usually offer the chance to use imaginative and radical design, for example in the use of height and available light, and can be rewarding projects.

Green market: TexStyle's new wallcoverings and fabrics exhibit the enduring qualities of hemp

Article Abstract:

TexStyle Fabrics has added hemp to its 'Nothing But Naturals' series of natural fiber wallcoverings and upholstery fabrics. With the help of modern technology, hemp has been softened to fit more interior applications, without compromising its strength and durability. It is ideal for upholstery and wrapped wall panels due to its low elongation of only 5%, one of the lowest of any natural fiber. It can be used for window treatments, humid areas and outdoor locations due to its resistance to mold and ultraviolet light.
