Investors seek a Doosan jolt

Article Abstract:

South Korean Doosan Group has been undergoing major corporate restructuring as it attempts to get rid of debt by selling assets. It sold a 45% stake in Oriental Brewery, and the Korean operations of Kodak, Coca-Cola, Nestle, and 3M, in order to increase its interest in Korea Electric Power Corp. Doosan Group is also looking for a foreign partner such as Westinghouse Corp. or General Electric Co. to increase heavy industrial operations.

Investors are concerned about the firm's being 51% owned by the controversial Kwon Seung Moon, whose firm Will-bes was the subject of a complaint by Korea's Financial Supervisory Service (FSS).

Banks in South Korea have started granting consumer loans such as mortgages due to a combination of demographic upheaval, government-sponsored deregulation and economic necessity following the financial crisis of 1998. The article details lending practices in the past and the new changes.
