Tourism industry woos Indians as budgets and interest grow

Article Abstract:

Indians are increasingly interested in traveling abroad for vacation, seeing the sights they once only viewed in movies. Banks and travel companies are teaming up to help finance the trips, while other travel companies are offering innovative and specialized tour packages. The market is very large, with 20 million Indians able to afford travel abroad in part because of a burgeoning middle class, rising disposable incomes and exposure to the global environment via satellite TV and the Internet.

Hindustan's current chairman Manvinder Singh Banga has big expectations for the food business, and now claims over 70% of the shampoo market.

Trading ban roils Bombay

Article Abstract:

The Securities and Exchange Board of India is prohibiting carry-forward trading, a form of margin trading. After the announcement, the Sensitive Index opened 4% lower than before, but recovered before the end of the day. The Bombay Stock Exchange experienced several cases of alleged stock manipulation during 2001.
