Invoice of America

Article Abstract:

Promoting American products and services is becoming an important diplomatic function of US ambassadors, especially those in Asia. The ambassadors to Indonesia and India recently had accomplishments in this regard. In Mar 1992, ambassadors to Asean countries toured the US to encourage firms to compete with Japan for export markets and investments in the region. Meanwhile, one congressman suggested including contributions to exports and business as a criteria for evaluating ambassadors. Another suggested mandatory internship in an exporting company to be eligible as ambassador.

Positive thinking: Tyson advocates managed trade

Article Abstract:

Council of Economic Advisers Chmn Laura Tyson is against free trade since according to her, foreigners merely manipulate and distort market forces. To counter this and to protect US industries, the government must engage in managed trade practices. Tyson also advocates government support for products widely used as industrial inputs. However, she believes that protectionist measures will not solve America's trade problems.
