Ireland and Gladstone and all that

Article Abstract:

Changes in relations between Britain and Ireland since the late 19th century can be assessed by imagining that 19th century prime minister, William Gladstone, was alive in 1999. He sought home rule for Ireland, and failed to achieve this in 1886 and 1893. The issue divided his Liberal Party. Many measures passed to help tackle problems in Ireland also benefited the British as a whole, such as the end of discrimination against Catholics. The Good Friday Agreement, which has brought change in Ireland in the late 1990s, and the moves toward devolution in modern Britain would fit in with Gladstone's views.

The beating goes on

Article Abstract:

Punishment beatings by paramilitaries in Northern Ireland remain a significant problem. These attacks, which usually occur in working-class Protestant and Catholic ares, involve loyalists attacking Protestants and republicans attacking Catholics. There has been a rise in the number of punishment beatings recently, probably connected with the absence of other ways for paramilitaries to express their views. The UK government is taking great care to ensure that this issue does not have a negative impact on the peace process.
