Ivan the talkative

Article Abstract:

The Russian mobile phone market focuses on Moscow, and has become more competitive and geared to a mass market. VimpelCom and MTS dominated the market until summer 1998 and VimpelCom set up an alliance with Telenor at the end of the year, following the Russian financial crisis. This has led to an expansion by VimpelCom, and it is uncertain whether MTS will reduce prices and upgrade networks in response to its loss of market share. Penetration is still low, and foreign investors are concerned about stability in this market.

LightTouch

Article Abstract:

A JV is to be set up from the mobile phone assets of Bell Atlantic and Vodaphone. AirTouch and Bell Atlantic set up PrimeCo, a JV which was later dissolved. Vodaphone acquired Air Touch in competition against Bell Atlantic, and the JV represents a pragmatic approach. Four board members of a total of seven will come from Bell Atlantic, which will also provide the chief executive. Vodaphone will be able to sell its stake if the JV does not perform as expected.

Unwired

Article Abstract:

The market for mobile phones is expanding in Europe, and mobile operators have seen rises in their market values. Companies that have performed well include Orange, which is investing in 6,000 base stations by early 1999. Traditional telecoms companies are less keen about developments that may erode value from their fixed line networks. Penetration of mobile phones could increase to over 100%, with some households having two or more mobile phones.
