Rambo to the rescue

Article Abstract:

David Ramsbotham, the United Kingdom chief inspector of prisons, argues that prison reform has been prevented by the Prison Officers' Association (POA). Working practices mean that conditions are worse than they need be in many older jails. There have been allegations of assault and racial discrimination, and Wormwood Scrubs in London is seen as a particularly bas example of an older prison. The POA argues that staff shortages, under-investment and weak management are the cause of the problems. There is some truth in the POA's argument, but the POA also has a poor record and has prevented reforms.

The last straw

Article Abstract:

There has been a move away from private sector prisons in Britain, although there are problems with public sector prisons, and the private sector has been relatively successful, with less confrontation between prisoners and staff. Staff shortages have affected the provision of education in the public sector, but not in privately run prisons. Buckley Hall is to be run by the Prison Service, though it was well run by the private sector, and there are suspicions that there are political reasons behind this decision.

Too harsh

Article Abstract:

The British chief inspector of prisons, David Ramsbotham, sees Woodhill prison, England, as too harsh. The prison includes a center for disruptive prisoners who have cardboard furniture and are fed through a hatch. Armed robber, Charles Bronson, argues that conditions in the jail can send even animals mad. Critics argue that some prisoners should not be at Woodhill. There are problems in dealing with disruptive and dangerous prisoners, but Woodhill does not appear to have found the solution.
