Article Abstract:

Japan Airlines (JAL) has ceased serving meals to majority of its first-class domestic customers on the week of Sep. 29, 1998, and gave away cookies instead. In its economy flights, the airline has also stopped serving its passengers cookies. JAL stated that the decision to eliminate free meals is the part of its efforts to save 265 million yen ($2 million) annually. Company spokesman Geoff Tudor stated that JAL has no qualms of allowing passengers to bring their own food, adding that the airline has established a central cookie center in Tokyo, Japan.
