VOLTAS MAY GET Rs1,300-CR ORDER

Voltas Ltd (VL) has created a new division for manufacturing construction and mining equipment. It hopes to bag an order worth of Rs1,300 crore from Coal India for the supply of mining equipment. VL has already procured a Rs247 crore order for the supply of mining equipment. It has commissioned an air- conditioning unit at Dadra, which has a capacity of 1 lakh units per annum. (gs)

RUPEE ENDS FIRMER

Rupee ended the day stronger on February 17, 1999 to close at 42.455/465 against dollar. Rupee opened at previous day's close of 42.49/50. The dollar inflow from some foreign portfolio investors resulted in rupee stabilising. The cut in the offer rate on dollar by State Bank of India persuaded other banks to sell their dollars.
