Jakarta takes bows, but Indonesia's woes keep mounting

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's financial sector continues to struggle for recovery despite government efforts to introduce fiscal reforms mandated by the International Monetary Fund. According to reports, interest rates have continued to escalate, while foreign trade debts may be left unpaid by the central bank. Despite the partial increase in the value of rupiah, some commercial banks have decided to withdraw from the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency, and seek merger opportunities, instead.

Lee excited about Optus

Singapore Telecommunications Ltd.'s chief executive Lee Hsien Yang assures investors that he supports the proposed three-option bid to acquire Cable and Wireless Optus Ltd in a $8.26 billion deal, and he has no intention of changing the offer. Investors have not reacted favorably to the proposed acquisition.
