Japan Tobacco poises to bolster profile in Eastern Europe; firm prepares for recovering markets upon purchase of RJR's international cigarette business

Article Abstract:

Japan Tobacco Inc is set on enhancing RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp's floundering Eastern European business right after completing its acquisition of RJR for $7.83 billion. The acquisition has catapulted Japan Tobacco to the third slot in the fiercely competitive global cigarette business. RJR's Eastern European operation has been severely affected by the economic problems of Russia. Thus, the new company, called JT International BV, will focus on marketing less costly cigarettes instead of the premium brands.

Anwar lawyers, judge clash as trial ends; defense team declines final arguments in bid to remove justice Paul

Article Abstract:

Judge Augustine Paul, the sole judge in the case against Malaysia's former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, will announce his final verdict on Apr 6, 1999. The verdict will be delivered despite the refusal of Anwar's nine lawyers to make their final arguments before the court. The refusal stemmed from Paul's sidestepping of a plan to remove himself from the case. The verdict comes at the close of a 73-day trial that began on Nov 2, 1998.
