Japan bank battle may be brewing

Article Abstract:

While Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group has signed an agreement to acquire UFJ Holdings Inc., it has still to come up with a bidding price. In the meantime, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. has put forward a bid for UFJ that is 43% higher than UFJ's market value. With a takeover battle brewing, investors and analysts wonder whether UFJ will reconsider its commitment to Mitsubishi Tokyo.

Mitsubishi Tokyo, UFJ agree on merger deal

Article Abstract:

Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group signed an agreement to acquire UFJ Holdings Inc. following a Tokyo High Court decision permitting the two to engage in negotiations. Japan's fourth largest bank chose Mitusbishi Tokyo's offer over that of its other suitor Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc.

Bank of Japan plans to buy corporate debt

Article Abstract:

The Bank of Japan said that it will purchase corporate debt as it runs out of traditional deflation-fighting options. It will be the first time that the bank has ever purchased corporate debt.
