Japan can say 'yes.' (liberalization of Japan's rice market) (Invisible Hand) (Column)

Article Abstract:

Japan is being pressured to liberalization its rice market. Member countries of the GATT see Japan's assent to such an economic policy as a gesture of the country's sincerity and stimulate these countries to do likewise. This development would earn the country a significant amount of international goodwill. On the other hand, the country's farmers are opposed to the policy. Japan could come up with an attractive compensation deal for its farmers to cushion the initial impact of opening the market to the forces of supply and demand.

Japan Inc. faces reality

Article Abstract:

The collusive practices of Japanese corporations are reflected in competitors' claims of barriers to foreign investment in Japan. However, government plans to regulate both production and prices could only generate adverse effects for the international markets since the levels of Japanese capital and labor have started to decline. Industries and businesses, therefore, could significantly benefit from the dissolution of business practices which foster collusiveness, restriction and non-viability.

Away from the brink

Article Abstract:

The US' and EC's recent agreement on the issue of subsidies for oilseed manufacturers has turned the attention of trade negotiators involved in the Uruguay Round of trade talks to Japan and South Korea's restrictive quotas on rice imports from other countries. Proposals have been put forward for the conversion of Japan and South Korea's restrictive quotas into import duties. However, both countries have expressed opposition to the proposals.
