Market failure and bank regulation

Article Abstract:

Banking panics in both the commodity and fiat monetary payment systems may require some degree of government regulation. Regulation could prevent the recurrence of such undesirable economic effects as a reduction in intermediation services in both systems and the failure of the monetary authority to enforce monetary policy in a fiat monetary system. If the banking panic arose from market failure, the commodity monetary system would need cost reduction regulation while a fiat monetary system would survive with a more limited type of regulation.
