A large number of smaller parties are challenging the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in Japanese elections. Candidates running for the five lower house seats open in an Osaka district include representatives of the Communist Party, the New Party and the Clean Government Party.

The first glint of a new Japan

Article Abstract:

The Liberal Democratic Party failed to win a majority for the first time since 1955 in recent elections for the Diet (parliament). The New Japan Party, formed in 1992, won 35 seats and will combine with the New Party Harbinger in a future coalition government.
