IMF encourages Thailand to loosen reins on baht

Article Abstract:

The IMF sees a more flexible exchange-rate system as the solution to Thailand's monetary problems. In a confidential report prepared in June 1996, the IMF cited the Bank of Thailand's weak monetary policy as the cause of the problem. The IMF recommends the implementation of more flexible monetary controls to stop the flow of short-term capital to boost the value of the baht. It advised Thailand not to worry about devaluation and focus on improving its currency policy.

Property market's swoon may be good medicine

Article Abstract:

The Japanese real estate industry has been suffering from a continued four-year decline in land prices and this has had some effect on the nation's recovery from the recent recession. However, some analysts are contending that this decline is actually a positive development. It has been suggested that lower land prices would have an adverse impact in the short term but it could also help boost future growth.
