Squaring the circle

Article Abstract:

The new study accommodation at Buckinghamshire University College Newland Park campus was built in response to growing numbers of students. The Newland Park campus is in a green belt area, designated as an area of natural beauty. The buildings were designed by CSK architects, with rooms planned in clusters of five, incorporating a common living-room and kitchen for each cluster. The accommodation on the northern slope takes the form of a square quadrangle and on the southern slope the accommodation is organized around a circular court.

Green building materials

Article Abstract:

Building materials have been greatly affected by environmental concerns. Timber is regarded as a suitable material by environment-friendly designers. Masonry construction is also environment-friendly. Insulating materials now used include glass fibre, mineral wool, foamed cork or glass and expanded polystyrene. Water-based paints are taking over from solvent-based ones.
