Japan must take steps to spur venture capitalism...

Article Abstract:

Japan must stimulate the growth of its venture-capital and private-placement markets to revitalize its economy. These early forms of financing are crucial to the creation of new, technology-driven businesses which, in turn, are necessary to bolster the country's capital productivity and economic expansion. Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto has responded to these issues by introducing a new financial reform package that is intended to facilitate the flow of capital into new, high-productivity businesses.

Remembering MacArthur's legacy in Japan

Article Abstract:

The end of the World War II saw Gen. Douglas MacArthur in charge of post-war Japan. Impatience with the lack of progress in Japanese efforts to draft a new constitution and his desire to prevent a future resurgence of Japanese militarism prompted MacArthur to convene several US military officers and civilian officials to draft a constitution based on his ideas. This constitution has been instrumental in institutionalizing the principle of democracy and the rule of law in postwar Japan.

China's Cultural Revolution has left a legacy of cynicism. Thirty years after Mao Tse-tung launched this revolution, which left one million people dead and 30 million tortured or persecuted by the time it ended with Mao's demise in 1976, the Chinese have remained skeptical of the authority of the Communist Party. Jaia Sun-Childer recounts her experiences during the revolution in her book 'The White-Haired Girl.'
