Japan: too close to the sun?

Article Abstract:

The Japanese economy grew rapidly in the 1980s when unemployment was low and Japanese companies were increasing their market share in a number of fields. Real estate and share prices peaked in 1989 and then fell by some 50%. Exporters have been hit by the high vale of the Japanese yen, and graduates have difficulty obtaining employment. The UK experienced recession earlier and the recession was not so severe. Greater transparency is need in Japan and problems have to be recognised if they are to be tackled. The central bank is tackling the issue through low interest rates.

Tax: is the US deal a dream?

Article Abstract:

Economists are now starting to accept that the Republican party's 'Contract with America' could have a positive effect on economic expansion. It focuses on the need to ensure a balanced government budget, with an end to deficits also promting an end to growing public debt. Under the scheme, taxes would be reduced, thus encouraging people to work, and a single rate of tax of around 18% of income with no deductions would be introduced.

Inflation: lower your sights

Article Abstract:

Inflation in the UK has fallen consistently over the last few years, but most financial and business markets expect it to begin rising again. However, the Bank of England believes that inflation will not rise more than 4%. Economic forecasts suggest that the general global trend towards low inflation will continue and that it will remain within the 1%-3% band over the next ten years.
