Japan mobile-phone makers look to add services amid competition

Article Abstract:

Japanese telecommunications equipment manufacturers have launched a Personal Handy Phone System (PHS) in Jul. 1995. The product uses currently installed local and regional network systems, which reduces call rates. Nippon Denshin Denwa KK has joined the newest market trend by offering PHS services that allow subscribers to use on-line networks through PHS modems. The services also cover voice-mail, high-speed faxing and call forwarding.

Japanese LCD makers prepare for new realities amid a glut

Article Abstract:

Japanese liquid crystal display (LCD) manufacturers engaged in a massive $2.5 billion expansion campaign in 1995. The expansion has resulted in rapidly declining prices because of oversupply. Overall, however, the LCD industry is showing signs of maturity as competition continues to tighten and yields begin to improve. Most Japanese LCD makers agree the keys to maintaining existing market shares will be pricing and innovation.
