Japanese rice producer sticks to investment in Vietnam

Article Abstract:

Kitoku, a Japanese rice wholesaler, has embarked on an expansion drive in Vietnam, an investment move driven by the thinking that the many Japanese scattered around Southeast Asia would want to have the same Japonica rice they get at home. The Japanese company has shelled out $1 million for a joint venture with An Giang Import-Export and has constructed a modern rice-processing mill in Long Xuyen. The expansion could not have come at a better time for Vietnam, which sorely needs more foreign investment in agriculture. It is the second-largest rice exporter in the world, which it can ill-afford as it is one of the world's poorest nations.
