The Italian market for jewelry, watches and clocks

Article Abstract:

Jewelry is the biggest contributor to Italy's over-all market, accounting for volume sales of 79.1% and value sales of 86% in 1994. The wrist watch sector pulled off the highest growth rate at 50% increase between 1990 to 1994. Although gold and silver jewelry industry in Italy has the largest values, the Italian over-all market for jewelry has experienced a year-on-year decline since about 1991. This may be attributed to the devaluation of lira, increase in the price of precious metals, stiff competition and the country's indefinite political climate.

Article Abstract:

The performance of the watch, clock and jewellery markets in France, Italy, Spain, the UK and Germany from 1990 to 1994 and their prospects for the 1994-1999 period are examined. High sales indicate the popularity of low-priced imitation jewellery and plastic watches. The analysis also include profiles on firms such as SMH, Christian Bernard Diffusion, Signet Group plc, Gori & Zucchi, Timex Corp. and Christ Group.
